What is Mulberry?

Mulberries are the delicious, tart, sweet and succulent fruits of the trees belonging to the Genus Morus.About 10 to 16 species of the Morus tree yield mulberries of which 3 species of economic importance are recognised and they are:

White mulberry tree - Morus alba, a native of eastern and central China.

Red mulberry tree - Morus rubra, a native of eastern United States.

Black mulberry tree - Morus nigra, a native of western Asia.

Mulberries, now are grown the world over. The mulberry plant is a rapid grower initially and slows down later. The tree is 35 to 50 feet tall. The mulberry fruit is not a single fruit but a composite fruit, as the entire inflorescence develops into a fruit. When unripe the mulberries are white, green or pale yellow with the edges pink. When mature they can be white to red to dark purple, almost black in colour. The white mulberry fruit is actually white to pink when mature. The darker variety of fruit has a stronger flavour than the white variety.

The mulberry plant has been highly regarded in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine. It may possess blood sugar lowering effects in animal studies. Preliminary human studies have confirmed its benefits in both preventing and treating type 2 diabetes.

Chemical constituents of Mulberry Extract

The mulberry leaf contains chemical compositions of the flavones, alkaloids, vitamin, carotene and many amino acids that human body needs, within which flavones is the main effective components.

Mulberry leaf has a substance called moranoline (1-deoxynojirimycin) that inhibits an enzyme in the intestinal tract (alpha-glucosidase) involved in the digestion of carbohydrates. Moranoline holds back complex carbohydrates, starches, maltose and sucrose from breaking down into glucose.

Now use the highest degree, the active ingredient is anthocyanin(fruit )and 1-DNJ(leaf).

DNJ (1-Deoxynojirimycin)

The chemical structure of 1-deoxynojirimycin is very similar to glucose. If the oxygen portion in the chemical structure of glucose were to be replaced with nitrogen, the composition would be exactly the same as the chemical makeup of DNJ. For this reason DNJ inhibits disaccharides (alpha-glucosidase) and can reduce the intestinal absorption of the amount in the body essentially helping to stabilize the level of sugar in the blood.

Plainly speaking the intake of disaccharides, (alpha-glucosidase / sugar) is immediately dissolved and broken down and absorbed by the body. But if DNJ is introduced into the body and because of its similarities to glucose, the DNJ preferentially gets absorbed. During the process, the excess glucose moves to the colon without being broken down into monosaccharide and does not get absorbed into the blood. Instead it gets discharged. In effect this maximizes the body’s absorption of any remaining nutrition because disaccharides tend to displace or inhibit the body’s ability to absorb needed nutrients.

Benefits of taking Mulberry Extract supplements:

For centuries, Chinese herbal medicine has recommended consuming mulberry leaves as a way to suppress high blood sugar levels after meals high in carbohydrates. When blood sugar levels spike, the body produces extra insulin. Over time, the pancreas's ability to produce insulin may become impaired or the body may become insulin resistant. This can result in Type 2 diabetes.

Research conducted in Japan has suggested that mulberry extract might be useful in preventing human diabetes by controlling blood glucose changes after meals.

Like some anthocyanins material has the following effect:

>Reduce blood pressure

>Reduce oxidized LDL cholesterol levels

>Reduce inflammation

>Reduce the chance of a heart attack

>Reduce recovery time following a heart attack

>Reduce weight gain

>Reduce eye inflammation

>Reduce muscle recovery time after workouts

>Regulate Blood sugar

>Reduce the chance of developing cancer
