What is Red Clover Extract?

Red Clover, also known as Trifolium pratense, according to Wikipedia,  is an herbaceous, short-lived perennial plant, variable in size, growing to 20–80 cm tall. Red clover has many other names, such as purple clover, trifolium, sweet clover, cow clover, etc. Red clover is a source of many valuable nutrients including calcium, chromium, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, thiamine, and vitamin C. Red clover is also considered to be one of the richest sources of isoflavones (water-soluble chemicals that act like estrogens and are found in many plants).

Chemical constituents of Red Clover Extract

The total content of phyto-estrogens in the red clover herb is approximately 0.17 per cent of the dry weight per plant. Chemical compounds such as formononetin, the compound genistein, the compound daidzein, and biochanin A. are some of the major compounds present in the herb. A mild estrogen like effect is displayed by the compound formononetin, the compound biochanin A, the compound daidzein and the genistein compound - that is they tend to mimic the effects of estrogen in the body. Phenolic glycosides, flavonoids, salicylates, coumarins, glycosides, mineral acids, carbohydrates, phenolic glycosides (including trifoliin), isoflavonoids, flavonoids, saponins, salicylates, coumarins, cyanogenic glycosides, volatile oil, fats, mineral acids, resin, vitamins .

Benefits of taking red clover extract supplements:

Red clover is frequently used to aid in preventing osteoporosis, reduce the chance of blood clots, and in restricting the development of benign prostate hyperplasia. The key benefits of red clover extract are summarized as below:

1. Ease MENOPAUSE SYMPTOMS Naturally

One of the most significant and beneficial health benefits of red clover is its ability to treat the symptoms of menopause. clover has long been used by to quell symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and night sweats. This is mainly due to the fact that red clover contains isoflavones, which are plant based chemicals that have been shown in numerous studies to simulate the effects of estrogen in the body.

Isoflavones, and therefore red clover, are used as an alternative holistic method of treating the symptoms of menopause and some menopausal conditions, which include hot flashes and osteoporosis.

Red clover has been found to contain a total of four different isoflavones: genistein, daidzein, biochanin, and formononetin. In contrast, soy has also been found to contain isoflavones and is also sometimes used to help treat menopause, but red clover possesses them in much greater abundance

2. Bone Health

Plant estrogens in red clover extract improve bone density, according to the Royal North Shore Hospital study. Post-menopausal women consuming red clover for six months significantly increased the external bone density in two tested skeletal areas. The studies are preliminary and more research is needed to reach conclusive results.

3. Cardiovascular Effects

Research shows that women consuming red clover significantly improved their cholesterol levels. A 2001 study by researchers from the Department of Endocrinology, Royal North Shore Hospital in Australia, found that post-menopausal women taking isoflavones extracted from red clover for six months reduced their LDL cholesterol and increased their HDL cholesterol.

Side effects and safety of red clover extract

Though red clover has not undergone extensive testing in longer-term studies (over 12 months), there have been no adverse side effects reported in the shorter studies to date. Nevertheless, variation among red clover formulations and extracts exists, and there may be situations where it is wise for women to consult with their healthcare providers before instituting the use of herbal remedies such as red clover.

For instance, chemicals in red clover known as coumestans may have blood-thinning properties; for this reason, women on blood-thinning medications should have their clotting time (prothrombin time) monitored while using it. In addition, women with a history of breast cancer may want to consult with their oncologist or breast health specialist beforehand. Women on hormones, even birth control, may also want to review the use of red clover with a qualified naturopath before adding it or changing their regimen.

Dosageof red clover extract supplement:

The appropriate dose of red clover depends on several factors such as the user’s age, health, and several other conditions. At this time there is not enough scientific information to determine an appropriate range of doses for red clover. Keep in mind that natural products are not always necessarily safe and dosages can be important. However, some recommend take 2 capsules three times daily, preferably with food.  Red clover per serving is 800 mg to 100mg.
